“I knew this would be an uncomfortable conversation, and I chose to have it in Danish.”
A client said to me in a recent 1:1 Danish lesson.
Ten weeks ago, they never spoke Danish at their child’s afterschool club. Last week, they talked to the staff about a real problem. In Danish.
They had passed PD3, but had never really used the language.
So we started by activating what they already knew.
We practiced speaking.
Then we took it into real life.
This is where language coaching really matters. We identified a safe person to speak with, prepared the conversation, and made sure it felt good enough to repeat.
Reflecting on that first real conversation in the next session was a pleasure. They were ready – and it went well.
After a few more weeks of working on small uncertainties and strategies and practicing conversations, they were ready for the real thing.
No role-play needed. They knew how to prepare – so they just did it.
At the beginning, they didn’t feel like they could have a conversation in Danish.
A few weeks later, they were having a tough one - by choice.💃💃💃
